Missing

We loved them, once.
Once, they delighted us, and we found them useful,
these miniature toys smaller in stature than a hen’s egg.
Hot Wheels burned on floor tiles.
Matchbox trucks gave us pleasure
in hand-fueled races and bang-ups.
Each knew its own storage compartment,
and we put them away, pleased at the play
they gave us. But one, and another,
never made it back to the box.
We found others just as useful and
before long forgot the missing ones.
The forgotten ones waited in the dark
next to sticky dust and a teaspoon forgotten, too.
Kept company by stray crumbs and a coffee bean
that escaped the broom,
the missing cars looked out
from shadows to the light,
trusting that next spring cleaning
a flashlight-wielding rescuer will look
under the fridge.

    Me too. Love your words.

  • Ha! I love it!

I’ve got three girls, so no toy cars under the fridge, but let’s see…
magnet letters, a Polly Pocket shoe, three marbles, one dime, a twist tie …oh, and a stray coffee bean.

  • you always surprise with your words…
thank you for a morning smile !

  • i really enjoyed this, Monica. and found myself reminiscing over my very distant past. i had boys too and sometimes knew the same feeling.

  • I remember the hot wheels of my three boys! I still find them every now and again. Even dug one out of the flower bed once. Nice memories for me :0)
