Monster

Like a green-eyed Grendel, this
insidious monster lurks at the gates
of my hall. She is fool Jealousy, persistent
to intimidate and harass and invade again,
silent, slipping past guards lax
at the gates; they let down their weapons
for half a watch, and she entered, earthly
and demonic. She tore at me, unsuspecting
sleeper at midnight. Then came, like a Beowulf
from above, Wisdom who grappled with this foe
bare-handed, no weapons, for this natural beast
resisted brute-force metal and blade,
required close contact, close combat, hand
to fist to face. And Wisdom drove away
the green-eyed fiend, restoring to the hall
peace and kindness, sincere friendship,
safety. I will ask warrior Wisdom to come
again.

Are any of you wise or sensible? Then show it by living right and by being humble and wise in everything you do. But if your heart is full of bitter jealousy and selfishness, don’t brag or lie to cover up the truth. That kind of wisdom doesn’t come from above. It is earthly and selfish and comes from the devil himself. Whenever people are jealous or selfish, they cause trouble and do all sorts of cruel things. But the wisdom that comes from above leads us to be pure, friendly, gentle, sensible, kind, helpful, genuine, and sincere.

(James 3:13-17)
