Things in Common
Christmas 1980 and I wanted her; she looked
most like me, Hawaiian Barbie
(dark-haired islander, close enough).
Her hair (not blonde!) was long
and straight like mine, but at the time
I didn’t notice everything
else that she and I did not have
in common.
Now I still
seek common threads,
not of touchable externals but tangible
soul-strands. Not attracted
by hair color but heart hues,
likenesses on life palettes.

We in the High Calling Blogs community (and many others!) are celebrating our Senior Editor Marcus Goodyear’s poetry collection, Barbies at Communion! To read excerpts (“Sabbath” and “Epiphany”), see the Amazon.com reader reviews. For a giveaway of this book, visit tweetspeak and leave a comment there by June 3 (better hurry!). You can even buy a signed copy.
Find Marcus at (among other places) GoodWordEditing.com and on twitter (@mdgoodyear).

The above “Things in Common” is for the High Calling Blogs prompt to “write a poem about, or from the perspective of, a Barbie.”

I especially liked the rhyme in these lines:
Her hair (not blonde!) was long
and straight like mine, but at the time
I didn’t notice everything
Thanks for participating!
