Idolatry Check

Bonnie asked, “How do you hear from God?” Sometimes I hear from Him via low-budget flicks. Low-budget because I am both producer and director, the screen is somewhere in my head, and the theater is the living room floor as I lay belly-down on the gray carpet. The film playing on my [...]

Chew and Swallow!

God’s Holy Spirit lives in every believer. He is our Counselor, Tutor, and Guide—our Director-in-Residence.
But His voice is quiet, and our spiritual ears must be trained to listen for His instruction and leading. Before opening your Bible each morning, ask Him to teach you and make clear God’s ways and will. Then [...]

You Don’t Really Want the Bible

I am an astronaut on my way to the moon. For years I have trained and trained, stretched my brain to understand the rocket that is to take me there. I know how this spacecraft works, down to every knob and meter, every strap and latch. I ride in it every day, [...]

Knowing a Father through the Child

I can learn about a father by listening to his child. This child asked his father only one question, and I knew the father a little better even before the answer came.
I am repeatedly delighted by the phenomenon that the more I slow down and look carefully in reading God’s Word, the more I [...]

Invitation

Honey pot sits
Sweet gold
Still hidden
Awaits
Calling
Hoping you will come

Won’t you come?
Come to the sweet
Taste
But first you must
Open
The pot
Won’t you open
To the richness
The sweet goodness?

Ah! now you
See
And the invitation
Continues
Now, go beyond
Mere looking
And taste

Won’t you meet with God in His Word today?
Don’t leave it there unopened, untasted.
Taste . . .
How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter
than [...]

Lingering

Have you ever sensed a pulling
back, a need
to
linger
someplace?
God is
drawing me
to stay
with Moses a bit,
there in
Exodus 33,
like there’s something
there
for me to see,
maybe something
to clear a bit
of
fog
that has
settled.
Or maybe it’s just that some
of those words
never fail to draw me,
like:
friend . . .
presence . . .
pass . . .
send . . .
Here is where
I linger.

My Silence Teacher

Our first baby was a first grandchild. As soon as he was old enough to laugh, everyone tried to make him. Or, perhaps people assumed that if a baby is not constantly entertained and given attention, he will cry. They gave him just that: constant attention.
“Here, want this toy?” Someone plops [...]
